  1. 1.  Thomas Major Lester was born about 17 Apr 1774 in Westbury on Trym, Gloucestershire; died on 09 Mar 1836 in Newcastle under Lyme; was buried on 13 Mar 1836 in Newcastle under Lyme (St. George).

    Notes:

Occupation at time of marriage also given as 'painter' or 'printer'.
Started his first silk mill in 1815 in Newcastle under Lyme. Made a fortune in the silk business.
Had a prominent position in Newcastle under Lyme as a householder and churchman until his death in 1836. Lived at Friarswood i.e. at the silk mill.

Extracts from 'The soft silk industry of Newcastle under Lyme by Stephen M Adams':-
'Two enterprising gentlemen, Thomas Major Lester and Samuel Henshall entered into partnership and, in 1815 aand they erected a silk throwing mill in Marsh Parade'. (ref. Parliamentary Papers 1834 XX page 312).
'The partnership was a success; silk had established a firm foothold in Newcastle under Lyme but unforeseen difficulties were soon to shatter the dreams of lasting prosperity.'

'In the period 1829 to 1832, Henshall and Lester's mill in Marsh Parade was still a relatively modern factory employing 150 people and was powered by a 8 hp steam engine'.

'Richard Faulkner of the Friarswood Road factory entered into partnership with Thomas Lester, who ambitiously transferred his allegiance from the Marsh Parade Mill to the much larger Friarswood Road Manufactory. This new association was a relatively short one. It ended with the departure of Faulkner on 27/3/1830. The Friarswood Road Mill later became a family concern when William Upton Lester and his brother John were admitted to their father's business on 1/1/1834. In the meantime, Samuel Henshall had replaced his former partner by his own son William.'

Gravestone implies that he was born in 1776.

    From Newcastle Museum: -
'Friarswood Mill wove both dress fabrics and ribbons. Ribbons were used to trim hats and bonnets and were also used as decoration on dresses, Silk dress fabrics were woven in narrow widths. The first silk mill in Newcastle was opened in 1822 by Henshall and Lester in Marsh Parade. By 1833 there were five silk mills in the area including two at Silverdale, which employed over 700 people in total including many children. The silk industry declined towards the end of the 19th century and the mills were converted to Fustian cutting'.

Friarswood Mill was used for silk production from 1835 to 1857 (Newcastle musuem). It was sold by auction on 13/05/1855. Another source says that the mill was built in 1825 and first used in January 1826.

Friarswood Mill was up for auction in July 1844. (His will was not proved until 1844!)

Mayor of Newcastle under Lyme 1841-1842

Extracts from 'The soft silk industry of Newcastle under Lyme by Stephen M Adams':-
In May 1833 William Lester testified that prices were depressed and demand was falling.
J H Thompson and Co. and William Lester (who by 1841 had succeeded his father as head of the Friarswood Road Mill (ref 1841 census) were both able to survive the depression. Lester was the owner of the largest single mill in the area. Thomas Lester and later his son William had even managed to amass sufficient capital to render the Friarswood Road mill independent of the larger merchant-manufacturers and their commission work.
William proudly stated in 1833 'We can chose our own silk, being throwsters not for hire but mostly for our own use'.
They also entered the weaving business in addition to throwing.
No other local mill was able to reach such an advanced state of development.
William Lester was well-equipped for survival in 1842, yet even he did not possess sufficiently large resources to survive the next disaster.
'William Lester had been popular and influential during his years in Newcastle and had served the borough as Mayor in 1841 (ref. White's Directory 1851).'
'Nevertheless, his long association with the town finally came to an end when he was unable to survive in the face of increased competition.
J and T Brocklehurst took over the mill. By 1851 Lester had left Newcastle (ref. 1851 census).
With regard to child employees, William Lester admitted that a strap and a cane had been used to inflict punishment in certain extreme cases. He stressed that such occasions were rare, and when they did arise punishment was administered by him and not by one of the overlookers.
'Lesters was the largest local factory and capable of employing in excess of 240'.
Factory Commission Report on Newcastle under Lyme and the Staffordshire Potteries, 1833 :- 'Mr. Lister (sic) stated that he always prefers employing children who have regularly attended a Sunday School'.

The following is extracted from a short biography in th Liverpool Leader Album:-
"In 1855 he succeeded Rev. G. Dover at St. Mary's, Kirkdale where his philanthropic tendencies and indefatigable activities found a broad and productive field of action. An earnest pastor and popular preacher, he has specially distinguished himself as an educator of the poor and a benefactor of the outcast. In 1856 he founded the Kirkdale Industrial Ragged Schools which he has maintained ever since, with almost unequalled success by his personal efforts, He has also erected other schools in his district so that statistics recently collected show it to be as well provided for and its schools as well attended as any in Liverpool. In all public affairs, political or social, such as efforts to restrict the number of public houses in Kirkdale or o improve the condition of the poor of the district, he manifests warm interest, and his benevolent labours are limited only by the extent of his strength and opportunities".

Census reference for 1881 is (Everton) RG11/3661 folio 120, page 12. (294 Netherfield Road North)

His will was proved at Liverpool on 14/12/1903 and Elizabeth Lester, his widow, was an executor. The effects were £84 15s and were resworn at £1393 10s 10d.

    Notes:

No obvious reference in any census after 1861. Not living with mother in 1871 census although older children were.
The following entry in the 1871 census may be relevant:-

Family/Spouse: Unknown. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Ada married John Henry Pearson on 10 Dec 1878 in Chelsea. John was born between Jan 4 and 30 Jun 1845 in Birmingham Registration District; died on 20 Dec 1912 in South Lambeth. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  19. 38.  Annette Curtis Lester Descendancy chart to this point (8.Rev3, 2.John2, 1.Thomas1) was born on 16 Sep 1861 in Norwood, Surrey; died on 23 Feb 1944 in Darlington.

    Notes:

Baptised 04/11/1861 at St. Luke's, Norwood.
Said to have been brought up by Vicar of Dulwich after father's death but she seems to have lived with John Westwood and his family (1871 and 1881 censuses).
On census day 1871 was visitor with Mr. and Mrs. Westwood. Manor House, Aleyne Park, Dulwich.
At the 1891 census she was visiting the vicar of St. Ann's, Tottenham, Rev. Letts.

Annette married Dr Charles Edward Walker on 09 Jun 1885 in Earl's Court, London. Dr (son of Dr William Henry Walker and Fanny Hewitt) was born between 01 Apr 1856 and 31 Mar 1857 in Aldbrough, Near Richmond, Yorkshire; died on 07 Feb 1916 in Hurworth, Darlington; was buried on 10 Feb 1916 in Hurworth, Co. Durham. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 94. William Henry Walker  Descendancy chart to this point was born between 01 Apr and 30 Jun 1890 in Hurworth, Co. Durham; died on 13 Jul 1950 in Darlington.

  20. 39.  Herbert Walter Robert Lester Descendancy chart to this point (8.Rev3, 2.John2, 1.Thomas1) was born on 12 Nov 1865 in Norwood, Surrey; died on 14 Jun 1935 in York, Ontario; was buried on 17 Jun 1935 in Mount Hope, Toronto.

    Notes:

Was sent to a church boarding school.

Last apparent reference alive in UK may be on 25/11/1916 (HW Lester, witness at Mary Monica Lester's marriage). However, this person could have been Herbert Newton Lester, her uncle, who called himself Herbert Walter Lester.
Was in Guernsey in February 1914 (apparently signing himself 'B R Lester' in an autograph book - see scrapbook).
Born at Norwood but 1881 Census says born at Epsom, Surrey.
Living together with his wife in 1891 census but is not in 1901 census and wife appears to be living alone. Not in 1911 census.
Suspicion: He may have been involved with his brother John Beaumont's wife and have been the father of Eric Stanley Lester. Eric Stanley was conceived shortly before John Beaumont's suicide. This in turn may have been something to do with John Beaumont's suicide. One reason for this suspicion is that he must have been closely involved with John Beaumont's family if it were he that were a witness at Mary Monica's marriage.

On 11/03/1913 a Herbert R Lester (age 48) and a Florence Lester (age 36) (ages are near enough correct) arrived at Portland, Maine on Ascania from Southampton. They are listed as English. Their last permanent residence is given as Ontario and they are 'Residents of Canada'. They were headed for Hunstville (Ontario).

A Florence Ann Lester died at 1276 College Street, Toronto 14/12/1925. She was born in England 18/04/1876 (more likely 1877) and her father is given as William Surridge, her husband as Robert Lester. She was buried at Park Lawn Cemetery, Toronto. She had lived 18 years in Toronto and 3 years at that address. The birth details check out but that person married James Butler S-1896 at Walworth. The marriage certificate gives her father's name as Thomas George Surridge. Herbert Walter Robert Lester also died in Toronto. James and Florence Butler disappear from the censuses after their marriage.

The 1921 census gives Robert and Florence Lester living in Toronto. They appear to be the same people as above. They were living at D'Arcy Street. They had immigrated in 1909. Robert was a painter and decorator. He is also listed as Roman Catholic. Note that Herbert Walter Robert was buried in a Catholic cemetery.

The immigration document for 1913 says that they had left Canada in 1912. Note that he was apparently in Guernsey in 1914.

Volunteered for Canadian army in 02/1915 but was unfit. At this time was living at Parry Harbour, Ontario.

Herbert married Mary Ann Else on 08 May 1887 in Paddington. Mary (daughter of John Else and Mary Ann Brown) was born between 1862 and 1863 in Somers Town, London; died on 16 Feb 1946 in Paddington. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Family/Spouse: Florence Annie Surridge. Florence (daughter of Living and Living) was born between Jan 4 and 30 Jun 1877 in Southwark; died on 14 Dec 1925 in Toronto. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  21. 40.  Elizabeth Helen Lester Descendancy chart to this point (8.Rev3, 2.John2, 1.Thomas1) was born on 13 Oct 1856 in Ashton Hayes, Cheshire; died on 25 Dec 1939 in Montmorency, Paris; was buried on 28 Dec 1939 in Issy-les-Moulineaux, Paris 1.

    Notes:

She went to live in France after marriage. This accounts for why she is not found in subsequent censuses.
Ada Emily Lester was in touch with a relative who used to send her sheet music. It is possible that this was Elizabeth Helen.
On census day 1881 was a visitor with Mr. and Mrs. Westwood at Philip Lane, Tottenham.

Elizabeth married Thomas Bernard O'Hanlon on 02 Feb 1884 in Hanwell, Brentford. Thomas (son of Bernard O'Hanlon and Sarah A Twite) was born on 01 Nov 1860 in Frome; died on 29 Feb 1932 in Neuilly sur Seine, Paris; was buried in Issy-les-Moulineaux, Paris 1. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  22. 41.  Jeanie Crichton Lester Descendancy chart to this point (8.Rev3, 2.John2, 1.Thomas1) was born in Jun 1850 in Kirbymoorside, Yorkshire.

    Notes:

Cannot be traced after 1871 census. No marriage or death recorded
No marriage or death in Scotland.
Could have married any time after April 1871, say, but probably not after about 1900.
    Marriage not Kensington 20/06/1881.
Possible that she went to Paris by virtue of Elizabeth having moved there.

  23. 42.  John Beaumont Lester Descendancy chart to this point (8.Rev3, 2.John2, 1.Thomas1) was born on 30 Dec 1851 in Liverpool; died on 10 Jul 1894 in Whitechapel; was buried on 14 Jul 1894 in South Metropolitan Cemetery, Norwood.

    Notes:

On census day 1881 was living with his wife and with his brother in law, Herbert Freyberg and wife Laura, at 200 Earl's Court Road together with another brother in law and sister in law and three servants.
Committed suicide by shooting himself in the head and died at the London Hospital on 10/07/1894. Inquest was held on 13/07/1894.
Address at time of death was given as 26 Halford Road, Richmond. This address was not listed in the 1891 census. His address in the 1891 census was 31 Halford Road. Sons, John Beaumont and Eric Stanley were born at 26 Halford Road.
Wife's death certificate gives his occupation as private secretary.
The term 'secretary' probably indicates that he was a clerk and the 1891 census records him as a warehouseman. The implication is that he was living somewhat above his means, having a house in Richmond and working in Whitechapel.

Director and secretary of a public company. Died at Albert Street, Shadwell, Middlesex. Effects worth £953 18s 2d
