Estranged from his wife (probably through drink) and buried with his mother.
Is said to have been beaten 'to a pulp' by his wife's father and brother. His drinking may have been a result of his war service.
One of the first to enlist in the 1st World War at the age of 16. Saw service in Ireland in the Easter Uprising and on the Western Front in France, where he was twice wounded. At the age of 18 he was promoted to the rank of sergeant in the 2/6 Sherwood Foresters. Was later commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He was later promoted to Lieutenant and served for the remaider of the war in the Tank Corps. He relinquished his commission in January 1919. He was one of the pioneers of the British Legion Branch in Clowne in 1922 and occupied every official position including Branch Secretary which he held for nearly 10 years. He served on the Parish Council and as a school manager until overtaken by ill health. He took a keen interest in social activities in the parish.
Worked as an insurance man but either lost his job or resigned and went down the pit.
Died of TB.
