William Cullen, Scottish chemist & metallurgist, was born 18May1867 in Shettleston, Glasgow, Scotland, the son of William & Margaret (Johnston) Cullen of Uddingston, Glasgow. His parents were married 03Jul1866 in Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. William had at least one sibling, a sister Anne Finlay Cullen born 23Jul1869 at Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland. William served with Nobel's Explosives Co as a chemist and with Kynoch's Ltd. After 1901, he served as a manager of the British South African Explosives Company, served as President of the Chemical, Metallurgical, and Mining Society of South Africa, and as Honorary Secretary of the South African Association for the Advancement of Science. On his return to England in 1915, Cullen was on staff at the Department of Explosives Supply, served as President of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, the Institution of Chemical Engineers, and the Society of Chemical Industry. William passed away in Edinburgh, Scotland at the age of 81 on 15Aug1948. William is said to have descended from the same family that produced Dr William Cullen (15Apr1710 - 5Feb1790), the famous Scottish doctor and chemist. The Cullens of Motherwell, Dalziel, Lanark, etc., are all said to stem from a parent family of Carshogle ( or Karshogle, Carshogill - meaning 'Carse of the Ghyle' or 'stream by the wooded glen' ) dating back to at least the mid-1600's. Concerning Dr William Cullen (1710-1790), it is fairly well known that his father was William Cullen of Saughs, Lanark. His mother was Elizabeth Robert(s)on, from the family of Ernock. From one of the accounts of Scotland, from the year 1688, it is said that "Mr William Cullen of Saughs, grandfather of the celebrated Dr Cullen, was one of the elders." and a name well known in the Covenant. This could be the same William Cullen, grandfather of Dr Cullen, who purchased some tracts of land in Bothwell parish in 1656 from Sir James Muirhead - "...William Cullen of Saughes ... the lands of Greinsyde, Trie, Foulzet, Holmebuss and Westfield in the parish of Bothwell...". The property of Saughs is said to have been in the family for "many generations" before Dr Cullen.
Family travelled extensively between UK and South Africa.
