  In 1891 census was living with his grandmother. When Harry's health deteriated through working in the mines, he and his wife bought a grocers shop at 231 Cresswell Road, Clowne. When they bought the shop it was dirty and rat infested. Harriett worked very hard, not going to bed until 4am, baking bread and boiling ham until the early hours. During their lifetimes they were the owners of their own business and a bungalow and 14 houses, and some pieces of land.
