"Calow, Mr. John, died at his residence at North Road, Clowne, on April 28th (1904), aged 88 years. He was a most enthusiastic Primitive Methodist worker and local teacher, and will be greatly missed by that denomination locally. At one time the deceased was contractor for ironstone on the Wingerworth Estates, and during the sixties he worked as a miner at Grassmoor. In friendly society work he also took a deep interest, and was the founder of the Pride of Clowne and Pride of Welbeck Lodges of the Nottingham Order.
The father of the deceased was at one time the sexton of Clowne Parish Church. Deceased's association with Primitive Methodism extended between sixty and seventy years, and for about fifty years he had been a local preacher, and in everything connected with the church he took an active part."
