2275 | This person is assumed to be the illigitimate child of Charles Simms. Although she was registered as Edith Coddington at birth, at the time of the 1891 census she was named as Edith Simms (age 6, born at Dunston) and was visiting Charles Simms' brother and wife at Sheffield with Susannah Simms. No birth of such an Edith Simms was registered. After her marriage there is no further reference to her or her husband. They may have emigrated (A Mr. C Fell, joiner, and Mrs. Fell left London for New South Wales on 26/07/1912). | Coddington, Edith (I5520)
|
2276 | This person may be a daughter of David Maxwell Doig. Not listed on 1871 census but did not die until 1888 (see below). Apparently not present at husband's death (see below). Death certificate suggests birth 1829. 1881 census suggests birth 04/1821 to 04/1822. 1861 census suggests birth 04/1824 to 04/1825. Calendar of Prisoners Manchester Order Book Ref QSO/2/247 MF10/64: "Catherine Brack Appearing in court in the custody of the keeper of the county Prison at Manchester aforesaid and having at this session been convicted of larceny after having been previously convicted of felony. This court doth therefore order and direct the said Catherine Brack to be kept in Penal servitude for the term of ten years pursuant to the stature in such case made and provided. And this court doth further order and direct that the said Catherine Brack shall be subject to the supervision of the police for a further period of 7 years to commence immediately after the expiration of the sentence of ten years penal servitude passed on the said Catherine Brack at this session for felony pursuant to the statue in such case made and provided. 8th April 1878." This perhaps explains why she was not at home in 1871(census) and 1874 (Husband's death) since it says that she had been in trouble before. In the 1881 census she was in prison at Woking. She is down as a widow which she would have been then. Her age is wrong. She would have served 10 years by 1888 Her death certificate indicates that she died on 14/01/1888. She was living at 18 Bombay Street, Salford (Greengate Area). Her age is given as 58 years and she is down as: the widow of Christopher Brack a machine fitter. Her son Christopher is down as the informant and present at death. She died of Chronic Bronchitis Anasarca (fluid on the legs). In July 1867 she was in Salford New Bailey Prison, convicted of being drunk and disorderly at Bury. Her birth details were given as Dublin 1827. | Doig, Catherine Jane (I2939)

The surname varies between Bricknell, Bricknall, Bracknell and Bracknall. Possible death: Thomas Bracknell, Walsall, M-1875, 6b 696. 2286 | Too many marriages in NSW to identify a marriage of William. There is a marriage of William Arthur Wright to Olive Marie Miller at Wollongong in 1952. The 1943 voters' list gives William and Edith Mary Wright living at 25 Victoria Street, Wollongong but no corresponding marriage is listed in NSW. In 1937 a William Wright, labourer, was living at Fairy Street, Keiraville. This could be the same address as his parents: Fairy Street, Gwynneville. William Cullen, Scottish chemist & metallurgist, was born 18May1867 in Shettleston, Glasgow, Scotland, the son of William & Margaret (Johnston) Cullen of Uddingston, Glasgow. His parents were married 03Jul1866 in Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. William had at least one sibling, a sister Anne Finlay Cullen born 23Jul1869 at Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland. William served with Nobel's Explosives Co as a chemist and with Kynoch's Ltd. After 1901, he served as a manager of the British South African Explosives Company, served as President of the Chemical, Metallurgical, and Mining Society of South Africa, and as Honorary Secretary of the South African Association for the Advancement of Science. On his return to England in 1915, Cullen was on staff at the Department of Explosives Supply, served as President of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, the Institution of Chemical Engineers, and the Society of Chemical Industry. William passed away in Edinburgh, Scotland at the age of 81 on 15Aug1948. William is said to have descended from the same family that produced Dr William Cullen (15Apr1710 - 5Feb1790), the famous Scottish doctor and chemist. The Cullens of Motherwell, Dalziel, Lanark, etc., are all said to stem from a parent family of Carshogle ( or Karshogle, Carshogill - meaning 'Carse of the Ghyle' or 'stream by the wooded glen' ) dating back to at least the mid-1600's. Concerning Dr William Cullen (1710-1790), it is fairly well known that his father was William Cullen of Saughs, Lanark. His mother was Elizabeth Robert(s)on, from the family of Ernock. From one of the accounts of Scotland, from the year 1688, it is said that "Mr William Cullen of Saughs, grandfather of the celebrated Dr Cullen, was one of the elders." and a name well known in the Covenant. This could be the same William Cullen, grandfather of Dr Cullen, who purchased some tracts of land in Bothwell parish in 1656 from Sir James Muirhead - "...William Cullen of Saughes ... the lands of Greinsyde, Trie, Foulzet, Holmebuss and Westfield in the parish of Bothwell...". The property of Saughs is said to have been in the family for "many generations" before Dr Cullen. Family travelled extensively between UK and South Africa. | Cullen, William (I5005)
