1854 Manchester Directory lists a Thomas Higson, coal agent, of 15 Hampson St., Salford, and a Peter Higson, mining surveyor, viewer and valuer of 11 Ridgefield House, Irwell Terrace, Higher Broughton.

John married Ann Grounds on 04 Nov 1855 in Salford. Ann (daughter of Thomas Grounds and Hannah Millington) was born between 20 Jun 1831 and 19 Jun 1832 in Moore, Cheshire; died on 19 Jun 1891 in Radcliffe, Lancashire. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

John and Ann seem to have become estranged in the late 1860's, after the death of their son John Millington, although in 1861, Ann was living with her father in Salford and John was lodging at Ashton under Lyne. They must have have been living together after that as Esther Ann was born in 1863. In 1871 Ann was living with her sister and brother in law at Dunham and John was living with another woman at Gorton. In 1881 Ann was still living at Dunham and John was living with a different woman in Hulme. There were three children living with them, Thomas, Jane and Elizabeth but, although they have the name Wright on the census, there are no children of these names born to John or John G in the indexes for Manchester or Salford. They may therefore be the children of his partner only, who have conveniently been given the name Wright.

Probably died in Altrincham district, 1866, age 69 (Cheshire BMD).
Likely that she was the base born daughter of Hannah Davies of Ashton on Mersey, baptised at Bowdon 03/12/1797.

No sign of family in Altrincham area in 1851 census except sons Thomas and John Goodier. May have moved to Manchester/Salford.

No death found otherwise. Was alive for 1871 census but not apparently for 1881 census. Likely to have died at Dunham Massey as that was his residence (farmer) in 1871. Not listed in parish burials.

In 1874 Manchester directory, Mr. Thomas Grounds was listed with John Grounds, tailor at 31 Frances Street, Chorlton on Medlock.

A Thomas Grounds was buried at Phillips Park Cemetery, Manchester on 02/04/1885, Grave no. 1048, position 21 in the non-conformist section.

Thomas married Hannah Millington on 04 Jun 1827 in Runcorn, Cheshire. Hannah (daughter of Thomas Millington and Mary Done) was born about Nov 1798 in Moore, Cheshire; died between 01 Oct and 31 Dec 1863 in Chorlton on Medlock Registration district. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
