The Derbyshire Red Book, Almanack and Annual Register 1905:-
"Calow, Mr. John, died at his residence at North Road, Clowne, on April 28th (1904), aged 88 years. He was a most enthusiastic Primitive Methodist worker and local teacher, and will be greatly missed by that denomination locally. At one time the deceased was contractor for ironstone on the Wingerworth Estates, and during the sixties he worked as a miner at Grassmoor. In friendly society work he also took a deep interest, and was the founder of the Pride of Clowne and Pride of Welbeck Lodges of the Nottingham Order.
The father of the deceased was at one time the sexton of Clowne Parish Church. Deceased's association with Primitive Methodism extended between sixty and seventy years, and for about fifty years he had been a local preacher, and in everything connected with the church he took an active part."

    Notes:

Best indication of place of birth is 1851,1861 and 1871 censuses which state Thealby. 1881 census gives birthplace as Nettleton. Both the age and place of birth are suspect in this census.

    Date of birth varies: -
    1851 census - 1821/2
    1871 census - 1820/1
    1881 census - 1813/4 (suspect)
1891 death - 1811/2 (maybe incorrect since his death was not registered by a relative). The probability is that he was born in 1820 to 1822.

According to the censuses Thomas Driffill was born at Thealby and according to his marriage certificate his father was Samuel Driffill. Thomas' baptism is not recorded as such in the Burton upon Stather register (Burton upon Stather is the church for Thealby) but there is a Thomas Duffill with no parents given. There was also a Thomas Mantley Driffill baptised at Burton on Stather in 1818, the parents being Samuel Driffill and Ann Maria Driffill (Mankell). This is most likely to be him. (There was also a daughter, Rebecca, baptised 20/01/1816).There was a Samuel Driffill at Nettleton in 1851. This is where Thomas also lived. This Samuel cannot be located in later censuses. The baptism of a Samuel Driffill at Burton upon Stather on a date which is consistent with the age given on later censuses (1792) suggests that this is the same Samuel Driffill.

There is no listing of Thomas Driffill or Driffield in the 1841 census for the whole of North Lincolnshire, or for Yorkshire where his future wife lived, which satisfies all the data. This includes Epworth where he was married.

NBI records age as 79, ie born 1812.

Thomas married Martha Middleton on 03 Dec 1850 in Epworth, Lincolnshire. Martha (daughter of Philip Middleton and Mary Brown) was born in 1830 in Tickhill, Yorkshire; died on 08 Mar 1908 in Hatcliffe, Lincolnshire. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 13.  Martha Middleton was born in 1830 in Tickhill, Yorkshire (daughter of Philip Middleton and Mary Brown); died on 08 Mar 1908 in Hatcliffe, Lincolnshire.

    Notes:

At time of marriage lived at Epworth.
A witness at the marriage was Mary Fretwell, 47, born at Tickhill! She was most likely her half sister.

    Notes:

Married at Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Epworth.
Unnamed male child born at Caistor, December quarter 1864, 7a 594. This child very likely to be son of Thomas and Martha Driffill.
All Diffill/Driffield births at Caistor checked from S-1853 to J-1871. Not likely that there were any more.

    Children:
    1. Enoch Driffill was born between 01 Jul and 30 Sep 1862 in Rothwell, Lincolnshire; died on 09 May 1908 in Hull.

    Notes:

At time of marriage living at Metheringham.
All censuses give place of birth as Metheringham but baptism not in Metheringham register.
1871 census gives age as 58, which implies birth in 1812/1813.
1861 census gives age as 46, which implies birth in 1814/1815.
According to Death certificate, he died on 11/02/1877 at age of 62, which makes birth probably in 1815.
May have been the son of William Wright of Walcot in the parish of Billinghay and Elizabeth Clark of Metheringham who were married at Metheringham 27/10/1800.

IGI gives birth in 1806. Not clear how the IGI has linked the Joseph Wright who married Esther Lupton with the Joseph Wright who was born at Methingham in 1806 - need to check the films to which they refer. IGI also gives a baptism at Waddington on 09/10/1814 but this is probably the other Joseph Wright , latterly of Harmston. National Burial Index gives age 62 at burial on 14/02/1877, ie born 1814/1815.
Death registered by W Blackbourn, son in law of 3 Carr Street, Lincoln.

Joseph married Esther Lupton on 10 Mar 1835 in Dunston, Lincolnshire. Esther (daughter of John Lupton and Elizabeth Bailey) was born on 29 Jan 1815 in Dunston, Lincolnshire; died in Feb 1899 in Dunston, Lincolnshire; was buried on 13 Feb 1899 in Dunston, Lincolnshire.
