Army records record that he was 5ft. 61/2 ins., fair complextion, hazel eyes, dark brown hair, civilian trade: labourer. Discharged from reserves 13/02/1911. Address on discharge was 25 Albion Street, Sale. Re-enlisted in the East Lancashire Regiment) at Manchester 03/09/1914, private 13571. Served 2 years and 255 days. Discharged 13/08/1917 at Warwick from Worcestershire Regiment (45824 Private) as no longer physically fit for war service, having sustained gunshot wounds in the back and leg. He was transferred on 29/05/1917 from K Company, 3rd Battalion East Lancashire Regiment to 5th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, new number 45824. His diary of the first world war refers to him as 13571 Private in 6th Battalion (also acting sargent), East Lancs Regiment. In 1915 was at Gallipoli and in Iraq where he was wounded.
